An unusually fine day in the Sound of Harris...

Location: the Sound of Harris, Western Scotland

Client: Caledonian MacBrayne (ferry operators) and Western Isles Council.

The challenge: to safely mark the navigable channel for a new ferry service through hazardous waters, at places less than 5 metres deep.

The marine charts were studied to determine the safest navigable route and to identify suitable locations for navigations marks comprising 5no 1.5 metre and 5no 1.8 metre high red and green galvanised steel perches marking some of the more hazardous rock pinnacles.

The ferry route proved so successful that additional, sailings were laid on, requiring many of the Aids to Navigation to be lit. We, therefore converted 5 buoys on location using 12 volt, 100ah photovoltaic batteries coupled with 2 x 10watt solar panels, powering Tideland ML 140 duoflash lanterns.

In order to light 5 of the columns, we designed and commissioned steelwork incorporating access ladders, battery and solar panel brackets, a "cage" for the lantern to sit inside and steel topmark to be bolted on top.

The outcome: safe passage for a successful, commercial ferry operation, despite the hazards of working in the often inhospitable conditions in this part of the world.
