Location: Barrow-in-Furness, EnglandClient: Associated British Ports The challenge: to provide an innovative and economical system of lights to help deep draught vessels navigate the deepened dock entry channel. FPM-H's approach: Using a package of Tideland ML 300 lanterns, FPM-H devised a system whereby two signal options are quite clearly displayed: red above white (clear to proceed) red above red (do not proceed), mounted on a specially designed and built steel tower. A "traffic light" arrangement comprising a total of seven lights, a red one on top with three pairs, each having one red and one clear and with differing beam intensities, cover all the approaches to the dock with a daylight range of up to a mile and a quarter. The whole arrangement is controlled so that the lanterns are switched on and off as required with the red light at the top always on when the dock gate is open. At night all the lights are under voltaged to reduce their intensity. The outcome: safe passage for ships, often carrying sensitive cargoes, entering the docks. |
